   Education ECSD
The Elko County School District (ECSD) enrollment
is approximately 10,000 students who are educated in 17
schools distributed amongst 11 communities, making it
the 3rd largest school district in the State of Nevada. Elko
County School District’s students, parents, guardians, and stakeholder groups, separated by distance, culture, and demographics, look to their schools as the center piece
of community life. Ranging from the one-room school
houses of Mound Valley, Ruby Valley, and Independence SCMS Valley, K-12 combined
schools in the cit-
ies of Carlin, Wells,
Owyhee, and Jackpot
and traditional el-
ementary, middle, and

itself, the Elko County
School District thrives
on its diversity and em-
braces the challenges
of educating students
throughout such a varied and independent county. The vast area encompassed by our county poses unique challenges; some of our schools are separated by more than a four-hour drive, several are geographically isolated, and one is located on the Shoshone-Paiute Indian Reservation. The diversity of our com- munities is echoed by the diversity in our schools which range from one-room school houses serving small ranching communities of less than 10 students to a traditional high school with a student body of 1,300.
Using multiple funding sources, the Elko County School District has implemented many state and local initiatives across our district. We are home to four Victory Schools, six Title I schools, two Nevada Ready 21 schools, nine Read By Grade Three schools, four GEAR UP schools, and three 21st Century Community Learning Center schools. Through grant funding, we now have six campuses in our district that are currently “1:1”, meaning that every student and teacher on that campus has individual access to a laptop or tablet device. We have collaboratively funded school resource officers and school social workers to work in ensuring campus safety and meeting the social/emotional needs of all of our students. Each of these initiatives wrap around the student body to create safe and respectful learning environments and support the whole student. We
continually seek new opportunities to leverage multiple funding sources which enable our district to provide innovative and evidence- based programs, technologies, and experiences to our students so that they are equipped and ready to enter college and careers as Elko County School District graduates.
In partnership with Great Basin College, students in grades 9–12 can enroll in dual credit courses
where they earn high school and college credits simultaneously, ensuring getting a jumpstart on college while completing high school requirements.
ECSD leads the state in Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs and Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO). CTE courses are offered in Agriculture, Business/Marketing, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Trades and Industry, and other aligned courses to provide students with a wide offering of job-relevant courses and training.
The annual Elko County STEM Fair is a regional affiliate of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, providing a venue for hundreds of students to showcase their talents. Many of the winners of past fairs have gone on to post-doctorate degrees, including doctors, pharmacists, university professors and science teachers.
ECSD recognizes that students learn differently, and therefore, offers alternative methods for earning credit in addition to the traditional classroom experience. Northern Nevada Virtual Academy is a public online K-12 distance education program operated by the school district. Students in this program are allowed to participate in co- and extra-curricular activities at their zoned school, unlike other online programs. Additionally, the ECSD Adult High School offers the Adult High School Diploma and HiSET Preparation Programs for
